Mothers' Union Past Events

The Mothers’ Union was founded by Mary Sumner in 1876. Mary Sumner was the mother of three children and all too aware of the burdens and responsibilities of parenting and the feelings of inadequacy which could swamp young mothers.

Over the years the Mothers’ Union has progressed in line with societal

changes and is open to women and men but their vision has remained steadfast and is one of a world where God’s love is shown through loving, respectful and flourishing relationships.

The aim and purpose of the Mothers’ Union is to demonstrate the Christian faith in action by the transformation of communities worldwide through the nurture of the family in its many forms.

Our M.U. Branch was formed in 1932 by the late Canon T. Moriarty and his late wife, Sybil who was the first enrolling member – which position is now familiarly known as Branch Leader.  There are currently 31 members of varying ages in our Branch and we meet on the fourth Monday of each month in Milliken Hall.

Our meetings are connected by a common theme and explore various aspects of family relationships, e.g. in the past we have considered the ‘Cost of Relationships’ and currently ‘Relationship not Rules’.  Although serious issues are discussed at our meetings, we all benefit from the fellowship and friendship we share.

We were all delighted when Bishop Good appointed our Rector, the

Reverend Irene Lyttle as our M.U. Diocesan Chaplain.

Please do come along and join us for an evening and you will be made most welcome.
